Alia was born in Mumbai, India. Her father is the film director Mahesh Bhatt and her mother is the actress Soni Razdan. Her parents were Hindus who converted to Islam to get married. According to her parents, she and her sister Shaheen were raised as atheists. On her mom's side, she is of Kashmiri and German heritage and on her dad's side,Alia Bhatt is of Gujarati descent. Bhatt has one half sister Pooja Bhatt, and a half brother Rahul Bhatt. Actor Emraan Hashmi, director Mohit Suri and Vishesh Bhatt are her cousins while producer Mukesh Bhatt is her uncle. she graduated from Jamnabai Narsee School IBDP in May 2011

Bhatt was linked with her co stars Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan on numerous occasions. However, Alia Bhatt denied these rumours in an interview where Alia stated that:Alia Bhatt
"I can’t stop gushing about both of them. They both are so special to me. This is our first film. I have learnt a lot from both of them. The kind of dedication and drive that Varun has is something that I want to take away. she is so anal about everything. she wants everything to be perfect and he works at it. she has a lot of enthusiasm and energy.Even Siddharth for that matter is such a superb actor.she has so much depth in his eyes. I feel proud when I see them perform. For me both of them will always be superstars. I was the youngest on the sets and they were very nice to me. Unfortunately for me, I have very low immunity levels and I keep falling sick or fainting. They were always taking care of me and there for me. I am as close to Sid as I am to Varun and I am fond of both of them. I just laugh about these link-up stories." Bhatt was also linked to her 2 States co-star Arjun Kapoor but denied such rumours also. Alia has stated that her best friends from the industry are Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and her mentor Karan Johar.
